Decatur Police Department Announces Police Volunteer Academy
The Decatur Police Department is unveiling a new community program for those interested in learning more about the fundamentals of law enforcement.
The Police Volunteer Academy will begin its inaugural class on January 16, 2018, and will feature 11 weeks of core content related to the foundations of police work and crime prevention.
Academy Curriculum
Academy students will get a closer view of K-9 officer training exercises, participate in an interactive firearms training simulation, and tour the Morgan County 911 dispatch facility where they will witness the processing of raw emergency information.
Other training activities will include:
- Meeting with the Chief of Detectives of the Criminal Investigative Division (CID)
- Visiting the Police Patrol & Traffic Annex at the historic Southern Union Depot
- Observing a Taser demonstration
- Detecting indicative behaviors and signs of a DUI
- Gaining a greater understanding of police internal affairs, Homeland Security guidelines, and school resource officer (SRO) procedures
During the Police Volunteer Academy, participants will meet every Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
How to Apply
Applications can be picked up from the Police Department or downloaded online. The deadline to apply is December 1, 2017.
Completed packets may be submitted at the DPD front desk.
All potential participants will be subject to a background check prior to admission. Academy enrollees must be at least 19 years of age or 18 years old with parental consent.
Alumni Involvement
All alumni will receive an official uniform, patches, and a badge. If they so choose, graduates can volunteer at community events like the Spirit of America Festival and the Alabama Jubilee.
Exclusive opportunities with organizations such as the Decatur Animal Services and Police Records Division may become available for those who have completed the Volunteer Academy.
Upon completion of the Police Volunteer Academy, program members may elect to participate in optional police ride-a-longs.
Continuing education courses will be hosted by the Police Department for alumni.
